Some were shocked when the band (partially) unplugged for 1992's "Let Me Come Over," but in retrospect, squealy ones like "Birdbrain" don't seem fundamentally opposed to strummy ones like "Taillights Fade." Indeed, the song that stands out is a slowed-down version of "Going Underground," previously released on a Jam tribute album. Over the course of six albums, though, Buffalo Tom's inner folkie has become more outgoing. Emulating producer J Mascis's Dinosaur Jr., the Massachusetts trio originally came on like Husker Du, drenching plaintive folkie-rock in guitar racket.
The liner notes identify the many tracks that were released as singles (A-sides, that is), but those songs certainly didn't fit any existing Top 40 format. If the title's pun doesn't make it sufficiently clear, this is a greatest hits album by a band that hasn't officially had any.
